Doom (2005)

As someone who grew up playing Doom, the only complaints I can make about the Doom movie are the fact that Imps don’t throw fireballs, and Hell has no part in the plot. But, those things aren’t really a big deal when you think about the overall goodness that it is.

I guess a lot of people will disagree with me here, because Doom is, by no mean, a great movie. It is, however, a pretty fun take on Doom, and aside from the aforementioned lack of connection to Hell, it succeeds in capturing the fun of the video game.

There’s not much to say, really. The Rock is incredibly bad ass. Karl Urban is a sniveling dip shit until he turns incredibly bad ass. There is an amazing section of the movie toward the end that is shot in FPS-mode, looking and feeling almost exactly like Doom3 (if Doom3 was made to play like Doom) that had me practically cheering with laughter at how incredibly fucking awesome it was. If I had money to throw around, I would buy the DVD just so that I could watch the FPS section of the film over, and over, and over again.

To people who have been putting off seeing it, see it. Just keep in mind that it’s stupid fun and, yes, they replace “demons from hell” with “genetically modified humans”, which is slightly stupid.

Begs the question, why couldn’t they just make a movie about humans opening a portal into hell on Mars? Would it be so hard? That idea is less convoluted than the one they polluted the plot with… but whatever.
