The Maltese Falcon might have been really clever but in retrospect, and in comparison to Chandler, it wasn’t satisfying at all and didn’t have any real teeth to it. Sam Spade is too clean, too flawless, and although Marlowe’s fits of talking to himself in Farewell, My Lovely didn’t really do it for me, it was a step beyond the completely neutered and impossible cool of Sam Spade. Some great lines of dialog. Terrible let down at the end, I feel.
